The ideasforgardens Garden Photo Explorer (ideasforgardens-GPE), a free download
program, has now been released.
What is it?
A program complete with a database which you will start from an icon on your own computer. It’s a program for you to use a) off line to analyse our database contents b) On line to link directly to exactly the photos you want to view on our site c) Off-line to access cached photos on your computer (Those you’ve viewed on our site. Depends on your browser settings). You’ll be able to personalise your copy of our database to keep track of photos you’ve seen, your favourite gardens etc.
We’ve even built in a general purpose feature which will interest the non-gardener. A web address organiser. More below
How do I use it? After downloading, click on the icon on your desktop to start the ideasforgardens-GPE
. Use the ideasforgardens-GPE
to select photos to view (see more below). Click on a button. Your Internet Browser will bring up the selected photo. To view next photo, click where it shows ideasforgardens-GPE
on your task bar and click on the next photo in the ideasforgardens-GPE list. etc, etc
What are the advantages?
Fewer on-line page loads, no waiting for server response to your queries thus shorter time on line, no cookie settings needed.

The ideasforgardens-GPE has two major functions:-
a) A number of methods of accessing the photos on our site. (We have something like 300 taken. We’ve invested in more web space and expanding
)
Accessing by Plant Name:- We want to give you names of the plants shown in the Garden Photos section of our site when known. Hence, the ideasforgardens-GPE offers a facility where you can either type a name or browse to find a plant. The ideasforgardens-GPE
will return a list of photos of the selected plant.
Accessing by Category:- Planning a water feature, rockery, conifer garden, etc, etc? We’ve drawn up a list of categories, and classified each
photo on our site accordingly. The ideasforgardens-GPE
allows you to make a query and returns a list of all photos contributed which fit your selection criteria.
Accessing by Contributor name:- Key in a Name if you are looking for photos from a specific contributors garden. The ideasforgardens-GPE returns a list of all photos for that contributor (all sets).
In either access method, once you have isolated a list you will click on a button. If you are not already on line, the ideasforgardens-GPE
will start your browser and you will log in as usual to connect to the internet (only when you choose your first photo to view per session). Toggle between the browser and the ideasforgardens-GPE to work through the list. The ideasforgardens-GPE
will automatically mark photos as seen on your database. The ideasforgardens-GPE will allow you to identify your favourite photos or gardens.
Thus, the ideasforgardens-GPE
will be your personal bookmark of photos seen, favourite gardens, and garden features or plant combinations which you wish to refer to when planning a project in your garden.
When reviewing, use the ideasforgardens-GPE filters to isolate your
favourite photos and gardens.
When we do an update to the files you will be able to download a fresh file set. Your bookmark of photos seen will be retained, hence you can
quickly identify new photos.

b) The ideasforgardens-GPE
has a Web Site address organiser. Use this for general surfing. Find an interesting site, categorise and save it AND copy and paste the whole web page (text only) into the ideasforgardens-GPE. Two configurable pop-ups for categorisation. e.g. You could set up the members of your family in the first pop-up. The second pop-up
could be Gardening, Shopping, Music, Travel Agents etc etc. Or, you could define Gardening in pop-up 1 and Sources (to buy), Garden Centres, Seed Suppliers etc in pop-up 2. Keep the program running when
you are surfing and copy and paste the web addresses into a category in your ideasforgardens-GPE organiser and whole pages of info into Memo
fields.
Note:- In the first screen which appears in the download, take the option to “Run this program from this
location”. This option will automatically install the ideasforgardens-GPE in its correct location and add a shortcut Icon to your desktop.
